CASH FOR CANDY – HUGE SUCCESS!
We conducted a 2 hour Cash for Candy drive on Halloween night when local children brought in their Trick or Treat candy, weighed it and received $1.00 for every pound of unopened candy they brought in. Since our community Trick or Treat was 4 days earlier, children had their fill of sugar and parents had tolerated the sugar highs long enough.
Children came in costume, trophies were given for the Scariest, Funniest and Best Dressed. They colored pictures and wrote letters thanking our troops for their service.
Vice-president of Blue Star Mothers Chapter 10 Helen Hampson was on hand to thank the children for donating their candy. Her organization sends monthly packages overseas containing beef jerky, microwave popcorn, energy bars, playing cards and lots of candy. She said "they act like typical 5 year olds."
Our local newspaper gave us great coverage on the event. We continue to receive phone calls from families wanting to donate to our Troops.
The gratification we feel working with our local Blue Star Moms makes our small participation so worthwhile!

Why did Dracula go to the dentist? Because he had a fang ache!
Make this Halloween a healthier holiday! The office of Glenn R. Burns DDS and Jennifer J. Lape DDS in partnership with the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers is working to make a difference by participating in a Halloween Cash for Candy drive.
"Cut the candy consumption!” is our motto. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing and flossing are important measures in preventing tooth decay, but getting rid of the extra sweets altogether would really help to protect your dental health. Candy not only damages the teeth, but excessive candy consumption also leads to hyperactivity and obesity in children.
We all have seen the overabundance of candy that is around the house for two to four weeks after Halloween. Why not support our troops and protect your children's teeth and health at the same time? Participating in the Cash for Candy drive is a great opportunity to get your children involved in giving back to our troops overseas. It is a great show of support for those risking their lives to keep our country safe! All candy collected will be given to Blue Star Mothers and then be sent in a care package overseas to our military personnel. We are offering area children $1.00 a pound for all unopened candy, and a gift bag. There will also be a card for your children to sign that will be sent along with the candy to our service men and women. Your children are also able to enjoy the fun of Halloween with the excess loot going to filling their piggy banks and not decaying their teeth!
Candy will be collected on Monday October 31st, 2011 between 3pm and 5pm only at 208 N. Columbus St. Lancaster, OH. 43130.
Trophy’s will be awarded for scariest, funniest and best costume throughout the day!

Give Kids A Smile Day!
Give kids a smile day is a national event sponsored by the American Dental Society to provide free dental care to underprivledged children.
We set aside Friday, February 5th to open our doors to 12 local children who preregistered for the day. We did exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, X-rays, sealants, fillings and extractions. The children had fun with the “tickling polisher”, the parents were appreciative of the care received and we, the professionals, had the satisfaction of giving back to our community.
One parent’s response to the program was, “today my 10 year old son was treated by your “give kids a smile” program. I can’t begin to find the words to thank your organization, the wonderful staff that treated him and any others involved with this program. Today was not just about my son getting beyond the horrible dental issues (he had six extractions and two fillings ), it was about giving my son confidence, self esteem, a smile, a new outlook on life, and a brighter future. I pray that you know what dental care can do for a child who has not had it available and how grateful we are to everyone. You’ve changed his life with your mission and generosity and I wanted to make sure you knew this! Thank you deeply and God bless you!”
